Amelia's first day of Kindergarten

Amelia started Kindergarten on August 10th.  The night before the first day of school, she had an open house/meet the teacher night.  We got to go and see her classroom and meet her teacher, Mrs. Heard.  So far, Amelia has really enjoyed school, but has not enjoyed waking up so early in the morning.  It takes me about 20 minutes to get her to a place where she is functioning enough to eat her breakfast!  Hopefully it gets easier as the school year goes on.

After the open house, we went to eat at the nearby Mexican restaurant.  We even got some dessert!

About to leave her first day of school.  Lydia needs to be included in everything!

This is our interpretation of a the German "schultuete".  In Germany, kids get a cone like this filled with goodies on their first day of 1st grade (1st grade in Germany is the first year of primary school).  We decided to give it to Amelia this year for Kindergarten since K is the all important first year of school here in the US.  She was surprised and excited.  We filled it with books, socks, a toothbrush, gum, and some fruit chewies :-).

Walking into school

Amelia with several of her girl friends from preschool.  We are very lucky that many of her friends from preschool are also at Mt. Vernon.

At Mt. Vernon, they do not let the parents go to the Kindergarten classes with the students on the first day (that is just wrong!!!).  Instead, we had to take them to the gym and the teachers came to the gym and lined up their class and then marched them off to the classrooms (sans parents).

There she goes!!!
